Education System in Canada

Canada has one of the best education systems in the world. Canada is one such country where students from different countries, backgrounds, race and culture come every year to get quality education. It is important to mention here that an impressive 175000 students come to Canada every year for educational purposes. Besides, a huge number of students visit the country to learn either English or French. Courses offered range right from aerospace engineering to zoology. Thus, Canada offers the much needed diversity in education. Student capacity of various educational institutions in the country ranges from 1000 students to 60000 students.

The educational institutions in the country encourage students from abroad to take up courses and this has been an important factor in the number of students going up sharply in recent times. The tuition fees in the country’s colleges are also affordable, as they are one of the lowest among the English speaking countries.

There are a number of good quality educational institutions in the country that offer degrees having worldwide recognition. The degrees offered range from technical to professional disciplines. To make the educational process smoother, students from abroad have been given the option of working for one year after they have completed their graduation. However, at present students can work on campus and do not need a work permit. Plans are afoot to allow international students to work outside the campus also. The education system in Canada is very advanced partly due to the fact that illiteracy rate in the country is pretty low (at 4%).

The government of Canada has laid special emphasis on education. The education system in the country has been divided into Elementary education, Secondary education and Higher education. Higher education in the country begins after the secondary education. Students depending on their specialization pursue professional or vocational courses.

In Canada at least 900000 people have been employed under the education sector. The sector has promising prospects for those wishing to pursue higher education. Citizenship and Immigration Canada have formulated policies for international students who complete a degree, diploma or certificate program in Canada. This does not apply to Exchange or School of English/ESL students.

This policy allows for up to a maximum of 2 years of work following the completion of an eligible program. Education is a provincial responsibility under the Canadian constitution, which means there are significant differences between the education systems of the different provinces. However, education is important to Canadians, and standards across the country are uniformly high.

High Quality Education

Education institutions are not officially ranked in Canada, but you will find quality institutions across the country. When choosing your school in Canada, consider the type, size and location of the institution. If you are interested in a particular area of study, investigate which schools have more to offer in that discipline.

Canada has a large selection of universities and university colleges located in both urban and rural settings in every region of the country. Our universities are internationally known for the quality of teaching and research. Degrees from Canadian universities are considered to be equivalent to those from American and other Commonwealth universities. Canadian universities are largely publicly funded; as a result they are of a consistently high quality, regardless of location or area of study. As well, they all retain a high degree of academic autonomy.

University Transfer Programs

Students intending to acquire a degree at a university can complete their first two years of study at a community college or university college and earn credits. Most of the credits earned in this type of program may be transferred to universities as the first and second years of a degree program.

Community colleges and university colleges that offer transfer programs usually have an established relationship with nearby universities however, it is important to check with the college to determine which universities will accept the transfer credits. You must ensure that the courses you take are appropriate to the degree you plan to enter in university.

Career Colleges in Canada are privately owned institutions that offer training programs that provide students with practical skills for the job market after a short period of instruction. Students seeking short-term training programs in multimedia, film studies, computer/internet studies, graphic design and hospitality to name a few, may want to consider applying to a career college.

When we consider about scholarships in Canada it is limited when compared to some other nations. They rarely cover the full cost of a study program and they are not always easy to find. For international students the scholarships available at some Canadian institutions only with respect to student performance.

The scholarship amount vary from institute to institute and the scholarship can be availed only part of the students education and living expenses. Regarding the scholarship information the complete details will be displayed in the calendar of each university very specifically in their websites. Community and Career Colleges do not usually award scholarships nor do school boards or most private schools. In Canada there were different organizations that administer different scholarship programs and them for graduate students and professors who are studying and doing their research on a specific subject. A very important note for the students who are seeking scholarships it is better to check out the possibilities in home nation only through public and private organizations.

In Canada student visa provision is intended as a temporary Canadian immigration service.

In this respect it is similar to a Canadian tourist visa or a Canadian work permit in that it is issued on a short-term basis only. Unlike a Canadian skilled worker visa, or any of the business visa options under the business immigrant programme, it is not intended as a route to settled status or permanent residency and it does not afford the opportunity to apply for Canadian citizenship. A student permit is issued with the requirement that you will leave once your study period is complete.
